About the Recreational Categories

Our recreational categories provide a fun and inclusive biathlon experience for all ages. These races are a great way to take part in the exciting Olympic sport of biathlon and everyone ages 9 and up is welcome to try.

For those with no prior shooting experience, these races provide a wonderful opportunity to get involved in this sport. There is a shooting lesson before each event so everyone gets a chance to learn the basics of biathlon shooting and take some practice shots before the race.

For those with prior biathlon experience, these events provide a fun, mass participation event where you can test your aim and fitness against the clock and your fellow racers.

In our recreational categories participants ski loops of a course, stopping for a shooting bout at the biathlon range in between loops. At each shooting bout participants take 5 shots at 5 targets in the prone position. For each missed targets there is a short penalty loop that must be completed before returning to the course for the next loop.

Rifle safety and target shooting instruction is provided prior to the event, as well as a chance to practice. Participants do not travel with the rifles during their course loops. The rifles stay at the range during the event and are shared among the participants.

To keep things fresh and exciting the race formats will differ at each event, so make sure to check out the event page on the calendar to see what unique race formats we will have at each event!

Ages

The recreational categories are open to everyone ages 9 and up. No prior skiing or shooting experience is required.

Course Lengths

Our recreational biathlon series events generally use three courses: 3x500m, 3x900m and 3x2km. The 3x500m category is for novice skiers, and the 3x900m option is a good choice for those looking for a little more of a challenge. The 3x2km course is for experienced skate skiers looking for a full-distance biathlon experience.

For our relay and team-based events the 2km course will not be used. You will be able to indicate your course preference when registering.
